    Water Resource Environment and Social Change in the Upper Hanshui River Region during the Qing Period

    This essay explores the integral relationship between state and local society and delineates the evolution of local society, the ecological-environmental and financial and economic basis o f irrigations systems, through a case study of weirditch irrigation in Hanzhong Prefecture in the Upper Hanshui River region during the Qing period.Weirditch irrigation in Hanzhong Prefecture is also examined against the background of long-term local physical and social changes.The author argues that the obvious erosion o f the water resource environment in Hanzhong during the mid-and late Qing period was the result of the interaction of multiple factors .It was closely related not only to immigrants opening up of the region, which hastened the speed of erosion, but also to the regions geological and geomorphic features as well as climate changes.The Qing period saw the steady increase of irrigation works constructed by local communities along with a tendency for local managers to assume control of irrigation works previously administered by the government..These trends coincided with alterations in the physical environment, fiscal and financial reforms, and changes in the management of irrigation organizations, which demonstrated a downward shift social control and the government.s increasingly indirect control of irrigation systems and local society.

    The Subdivision and Concentration of Villages in Huabei Plain in the Ming and Qing Dynasties

    This article systematically analyzes the subdivision of villages and explores the historical dynamics and factors contributing to the concentration of settlements on the Huabei Plain.The research indicates that the number of villages increased rapidly early in the period mainly due to structural subdivision , natural disasters , and administrative decisions.This subdivision increased the number of villages and gradually completed the process of spatial concentration.

    The Volume of Bamboo and Lumber Transported in the Early Qing

    Bamboo and lumber occupied a prominent place among the total circulation of commodities during the early Qing.The establishment of a special customs duty on bamboo and lumber provided further evidence of its importance in the over-all trade of this period. Taking the long-distance circulation of bamboo and lumber as its primary focus, the article uses customs receipts to establish the major trade routes and uses a variety of methods to estimate roughly the volume of trade in bamboo and lumber during the Qing.

    Functioning in the manner of a national treasury, the silver vault of the Ministry of Revenue ( Hubu) handled the income and expenditure of the central government .This article under takes a preliminary study on the silver vault system examines the revenues from each province, personnel administration, the receipt, allocation, and storage of silver and other related matters .The article describes the reforms of the silver storage system after the Boxer Uprising in detail and also carefully examines the advantages and disadvantages of the system and analyzes the important reforms of the financial system during the Late Qing Reform.

    Taking t he case of the Qis , a very prominent lineage in Shouyang , Shanxi Province , this article investigates the process by which large clans utilized a variety of resources to establish its authority in grass-roots society.After the lineage’s authority gradually declined , the villagers still preserved the historical memory of the Qi’s authority and utilized this local resource.Through investigating the example of Qi family , we not only enrich our understanding of the living conditions of lineages in North China , but , at the same time , deepen our understanding of the power of the lineages , the resources of local authority , and the power nexus in North China.

    When the Russo-Japanese War broke out, China, Britain, France, Germany and America jointly for med the International Red Cross Society of Shanghai on March 10th 1904 to treat wounded soldiers and civilian casualties.T his society raised funds, collected donations, increased the number of t he sub-societies and implemented the relief efforts.Within at three year period the society played a role in the rescue, treatment, recuperation and resettlement of 467, 000 wounded people, composing an ode to international humanitarianism.

    Liu Dapeng was a country gentleman whose lifetime spanned both the Qing Dynasty and Republican Era.Liu took part in the imperial exam five times and taught at a private school for twenty years.He was a farmer and a businessman for many years in his home town after the abolishment of the imperial exam system.In this study , the author breaks with the convention of“question consciousness”, using the method of historical narration to outline the track of the Liu Da-Peng’s entire life.
