By the end of the Guangxu Reign, the Beiyang Fleet had developed to the point of possessing 25 warships despite the fact that during this time the Empress Dowager Cixi had misappropriated 5-6 million liang of silver earmarked for naval construction to build the summer palace。Thus we cannot simply attribute China’s defeat in the Sina-Japanese War to the building of the Summer Palace. The fact that there were no further naval acquisitions was due to Cixi’s becoming suspicious of Li Hongzhang. She placed great importance on her sixtieth birthday which she planed to celebrate on a large scale at the Summer Palace and even when the war broke out she was unwilling to change her plans until the situation became dire. Her attitude toward the war went through several stages. At first she had a tough anti-Japanese stance, but after Qing defeats, she adopted a policy of capitulation and attacked the pro-war faction. She sent Li to Japan to sue for peace and encouraged him to sign the Treaty of Shimonoseki.

A New Word! A New World? The Analysis of Women s World in the Late Qing and Early Republican Era

    Abstract1522)      PDF(pc) (810KB)(953)       Save
This article explores the alternative subjective formation of Chinese women in the late Qing and early Republican eras with an emphasis on one neologism women`s world ( nujie). When women s world first appeared around 1902,it witnessed a narrowing process of its definition from a loosely established community that admitted anyone, whether men or women, with progressive concerns about women`s rights,to a strictly confined world for women and women only.As a consequence, men`s world(nanjie) was produced specifically as the antonym of women s world.Meanwhile, under the influence of the political theory on grouping in modern China, women`s world also qualified Chinese women as active participants in the state building process,in parallel with other worlds in the society. However, when women`s world became too radical and pursued women s rights beyond the nationalist limit,it was immediately mocked and distorted as the naturalized ally of prostitutes world ( jijie) .Women`s world was probably a word for all,but not a world for all.

The French Mission in Peking after the Suppression of the Society of Jesus: A Study Based on the Correspondences of the Missionaries

In the 18th century, the Society of Jesus developed into an enormous international religious order. Unfortunately in 1773,over 200 years since its foundation,it was suppressed by Pope Clément XIV by the promulgation of the papal brief-Dominus ac Redemptor after encountering much criticism for its submission to the leadership of the Roman Curia and the missionary work it carried out overseas. The incident prompted the Portuguese and the Roman Congregations for the Propagation of the Faith who had long-standing conflicting interests in China to grab the property used to belong to the French mission in Peking. To protect them from being snatched by other countries, the former members of the Jesuits in conjunction with the French Emperor and some ministers started a hard-won battle over the ownership of these properties that took over a decade and engaged stakeholders across two continents. Thanks to their consistent efforts, the Roman Congregations for the Propagation of the Faith eventually approved in 1783 that the French mission in Peking should be taken over by the French Congregation of the Mission ( Lazarists) . In 1814,the Society of Jesus was reinstated by Pie VII and in 1842 members of the Society was dispatched back to China and the Mission of Peking has remained the responsibility of the French Congregation of the Mission ever since.
