    2011, 0(4): 14-26.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (301KB) ( )
Among many battles between Ming and Qing Dynasty, the Battle of 1629 ( also known as the Battle of Ji-Si Year) has yet to be properly researched and evaluated. From the perspective of military affairs, this battle does not standout as an important event. However,if one looks it from the perspective of culture,it has a profound connotation of its own. In the authors, the Battle of Ji-Si Year was important, not because which side won or lost on the battlefield, but because it reflected the opposing ideas of war among the new nobles of Manchuria, represented by Huang Taiji, and the established conservative nobler. Indeed, this battle becomes a watershed between new and old ideas of war. The battle also becomes a starting point of new concepts of war within Manchuria society. Finally, the battle greatly advanced the cultural transformation of the Manchuria elite groups as a whole.

    Abstract ( )   PDF (131KB) ( )
The Banner and League system,as a key institution for administrating Mongolian affairs during the Qing Dynasty, was fully established during the reigns of Emperors Yongzheng and Qianlong. Lacking archival sources, there has been no academic research on the formation, evolution, and operation of this system. However,in its memorials to Emperor Shunzhi, the court for the affairs regulating the outer mongolic government ( Lifanyuan) ,reported on related issues. Therefore the Manchu and Mongolic memorials of the Court for the affairs regulating the outer mongolic government can advance academic research on the alliance system in the early Qing dynasty. On the basis of these memorials and otherresearch, this essay discusses the alliance systems that predated the Banner and League system, and clearly describes their operations.

    MAO Xiaoyang
    2011, 0(4): 49-59.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (175KB) ( )
The Binxing ceremony of Ming dynasty was the direct headstream of Qing version. The choreography of the Qingpractice was just the same as the Ming, but during the Qing the Binxing ceremony had gradually developed into a special ceremony for sending off the candidates for the imperial examination at the provincial level. As to the Binxing ceremony in Qing dynasty, decorated archway and moon bridges were the most familiar stage sets, and Jiaguan and
Kuixing were the most familiar dramas which were a type of short play performed before the formal drama. In the early Qing dynasty, the local budget for imperial examinations was reduced by a wide margin,so the prefectures and local gentry managed to set up foundations in order to ensure that the Binxing ceremony continue to be held.

Social Turmoil,Crisis of Stability and Governmental Control in the Jiangnan in 1871
    FENG Xianliang
    2011, 0(4): 76-90.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (216KB) ( )
In the aftermath of the warfare with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, local governments in the Jiangnan were confronted with essential tasks such as the reconstruction of social order and the recovery of economic production, but the sense of crisis and potential danger of turmoil in the postwar years made
these tasks difficult. This paper explores the revolt by so-caued “jiaofei” ( religious bandits) to attack Guangde department and Jianping county in March,1865,and narrates the cooperative quelling actions by authorities of Jiangsu,Zhejiang and Anhui provinces. Although it is generally acknowledged that local social control was weakened to various degrees after the Taiping Rebellion, this vertical integrated system of control from the court to the local governments included the baojia system and provincial administrations at all levels. The view that local social control was weak,is perhaps incorrect given the successful suppression of this insurrection

    HUANG Zhonghuai
    2011, 0(4): 91-99.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (398KB) ( )
During the evolution of traditional village communities, the structural system of village temples was closely related to community space. Changes of space in village communities have shaped different levels of temples, which as the token of community space, consolidated settlement space of different scales and levels. Generally speaking, the evolution of village community space must undergo space consolidation-differentiation of space communities-space reconsolidation. Correspondingly, the earth god temple, which symbolizes the independent village's development from settlements, accomplished the initial consolidation of village space, while compound temples resulted from space community differentiation. Village Chenghuang temples had a lot to do with the reconsolidation of differentiation of village space.
